3 Keys To Successful Hiring

Successful hiring is one of the greatest challenges small businesses face. As a small business owner, you know your team is the most important asset to your company, but often you are burdened with overcomplicated recruitment, endless stacks of resumes, and unproductive interviews.

So, how do you identify the right candidates and ensure they will succeed in your company culture while utilizing an efficient and streamlined method? We recommend applying these three keys throughout the entire hiring process that will result in success.

1. Focus on communication

  • Begin with a well-thought-out job description. Take the time to thoroughly define what problem this position will solve and what success looks like.

  • As candidates progress through the process, communicate every step of the way. Some examples of information to share are:

    • Where they are in the process? For example: “This Skills Assessment is the final step before moving onto the interview stage.”

    • How long it should take to complete initial Screening Questions?

    • Who will be present during their interview?

    • When should they expect to hear back after an interview?

  • Keep communication clear and effective. Share all needed details, but avoid over-communication. Unnecessary or unfocused communication can lead to confusion.

2. Utilize a team-based approach

  • Collaborate with your team when creating the job description. It’s important to gather input from those who will supervise and work regularly with the person in this position.

  • Have 2-3 other team members participate in interviews. Everyone will assess the candidate from a different perspective.

3. Be consistent with all candidates

  • Determine the steps of your process.

  • Utilize an Applicant Tracking System.

  • Define your screening methods.

  • Establish objective criteria to use for evaluation.

  • Create standard questions to be asked during interviews.
